Find Electronic Book Readers in Q&A
Do you think electronic book readers are worth it? (such as Kindle, Sony Reader, and Nook)? I've always wondered if you think they were worth it. They look pretty cool, and I read from time to time. They aren't that expensive, and on the Nook and Kindle a lot of books are free. They've always just looked cool, but do you think they are worth the $250 dollars they are? Thanks for the answers, have a good day!

Zee replied: "-I have had my Kindle 2 since February and I LOVE it! Right now I'm using it to catch up on books and series that I never got around to reading, so I'm not even paying Amazon's average bestseller price of 9.99 for a book. Some are very very cheap and some are even free. (Presumably to introduce you to the author.) It is always in my purse and I pull it out at railroad crossings, at lunch, everywhere. With the adjustable type size, I can read it in bed without my glasses. And it is so lightweight... I tried reading a big book from the library the other day. Within two chapters, I got it for Kindle instead. Spoiled? Moi? Yup!"

Pauline A replied: "I own the Kindle 2, so let me give you some of my opinions. I've to say I love it! I think I've read over 30 books with my Kindle, no glitches so far! One of the reasons I love my Kindle is that it has helped me improve a lot on my efficiency and utilize my time. Before I have the Kindle, waiting time like when I'm waiting for friends or waiting for shuttle bus or some thing like that is simply wasted. Now I just need to bring the Kindle 2 along with me, and all my favorite books are inside it. Another thing I like the most is the text-to-speech function, which means I can "read" books without even holding or looking at the Kindle. Now I like to use this function when I've myself busy on some boring things, say when I'm on the step machine or doing some housework... I like reading and at the beginning I did miss a bit on the feeling of reading books. But now I love to hold the Kindle, the e-ink seems to work very well, it is really like reading books... Now I often read with the Kindle for several hours but I don't feel tired... And I now prefer to manage all books inside the Kindle rather than my never big enough bookshelf... Yes, there are quite a lot of free books, and many Kindle books, magazines and newspapers are cheaper than the actual paper version. I remember I read these reviews about the benefits of the Kindle when I decided to buy it: Finally, guess you know, Amazon has just put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling $100 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle, and it adds in international wireless access... So take the chance if you want it. Hope it helps :)"

Natural replied: "Yes, I do think they worth. Books on the electronic book readers are cheaper, adn it can definitely save you quite a lot of money in long term... I would also like to mention something about the three ebook readers. Sony Reader is difficult to find books on it. For the Kindle and Nook, it is a draw and which to go depends on what you need. From the official page of B&N, here is how the Nook compares with the Kindle: Since Barnes and Noble page is only mentioning the advantage of the Nook over the Kindle, let me try to tell more about the benefit of the Kindle 2 over the Nook: - There is no internet browser for the Nook. So even with Wi-Fi, you can only use it to purchase book. You cannot do searching in Google, Wikipedia, check email, etc., like what you can do with the Kindle. - The Amazon Kindle has international free 3G wireless which covers over 100 countries. So even if you're in places like the UK or Australia, you can access the internet with the Kindle free of charge. The Nook has wireless only within the U.S., and is limited for use of buying books only - The Kindle is available outside the U.S. (it ships to 176 countries), while the Nook only ship within the U.S. at this moment. - The Kindle has text-to-speech function, so it can treat an ebook like audio book. This function is not present on the Nook. - Amazon is already doing some change after the Nook is announced (still more than one month for it to be available). They dropped the price of their International Kindle even further. And they are going to release a PC software which can read their Kindle books. One more thing to be aware is that, at first glance you may think the Nook can read ebooks with color touch screen. But indeed the color touch screen is only a small screen beneath the greyscale eink screen, and seems it is only used to browse the cover of ebooks. In my opinion, it is a tie between the Kindle and the Barnes and Noble. But if you may travel and you enjoy reading during your trip, you should go for the Kindle for sure. Moreover, I trust the Kindle will come up with some strategies very soon, like improving their lending book function. The Kindle is the biggest player in the ereader market right now, and I believe it will put enormous effort to hold its position. I recommend this article as well, it is the best review on ebook readers I've ever read: Hope this helps you decide."

Where can I buy a Kindle Electronic Book Reader in Singapore at a good price? Any ideas?

Arthur H replied: "You need to find some one in the United States to help you buy it and ship to you, as Amazon website does not allow any buyers from outside the United States for the Kindle right now. If you are in Singapore, the best benefit of Kindle that it has wireless access everywhere vanishes. I'll suggest you to get the Sony reader instead. Quite a lot of people vote for it for better PDF support and touchscreen function: "

Gypsy Girl replied: "You might be able to get one on Ebay, but not directly from Amazon. Also, you need a credit card with a US address to be able to buy books. Because of some copywrite issues, amazon is not able/willing to sell Kindles or Kindle books outside of the US. There are many people outside of the US that have Kindles and buy books. I'm not sure exactly how they do it."

Shin Asura replied: "Try here: Or try searching ebay= Good luck"

sony electronic book reader? i was looking into getting myself a Kindle2, but then i saw the sony electronic reader...i just had to ask to those of you who have either of them....how does the downloading of books work? do you have to pay for all of them? how much are they? and if you have the ebook on your computer already can you transfer it to either one?

hchavarria replied: "They are both pretty good devices but I would stick with the Kindle myself. Sony similar to the Kindle have an online bookstore where you can buy books and put them on the device. I like the Kindle because you can buy book from anywhere since it has 3G"

Pauline A replied: "I own the Kindle 2. For both the Kindle and the sony reader, you'll need to buy your own books on them. But books on the Kindle will be cheaper than those on the sony reader, as Amazon managed to compromise with the publishers so to push up the sales of both the Kindle and electronic books. Yes, you can transfer ebooks in PDF to either of the device. For the Kindle 2, it allows you to convert PDF to Kindle format, then read it on the Kindle. To compare the two devices, I'll say the advantage of sony reader over the Kindle2 is that is has touch screen, but many people complaint that it is glare to read with the touch screen... On the other hand, the Kindle 2 provides free wireless internet access, at anywhere with the 3G Sprint network coverage. It also has the text-to-speech function, which I personally like it very much as it allows me to "read" books just like listen to music on the ipod... Some owners of the sony reader also complaint that it is more difficult to find books for the reader compared to the Kindle... Read this review and you'll know more: So I'll favor the Kindle 2 very much over the sony reader. Hope that helps."

Mike P replied: "The sony reader is a bit cheaper than the Kindle 2. However, I'll still suggest the Kindle2, unless you are outside the United States (as Amazon doesn't allow order of the Kindle outside the U.S.) The biggest issue is the content availability. The Kindle is supported by Amazon with much more book selections. And Kindle books are cheaper than the actual books, so it will save you money in long term. In addition, Amazon provides thousands of Kindle books for free or at a low price. Sony reader is much weaker in this area. For downloading books, you'll need to download or buy ebooks through your computer first then copy the ebooks to the readers. This is the only option for the sony reader. While for the Kindle 2, there is an additional option that you can download or buy books from Amazon directly through the Kindle. It has free 3G internet access so you can buy books anywhere with the 3G coverage. There is a good comparison here about the two digital book readers. It also lists the supported file formats of both readers, that you can have your ebooks read on the device: And you may be interested to read this review too: "

Which is the best electronic book reader? ? ok - so I have been trying to find out which is the best ebook reader but there is so much information flying around that I am none the wiser! I want to buy one as a present for my Dad so it needs to be simple to use and quite intuitive (and obviously, the cheaper the better). Any ideas?

Daniel Owen replied: "I have a Sony Reader PRS-505 and absolutely love it. It looks stylish and is very easy to use. £200, so not sure if you'd count that as cheap."

freakingweekend replied: "The Sony Reader is great (and simple to use) but the Hanlin V3 is actually quite a 'dad' reader. It's got a more classic look - more for book lovers rather than gadget lovers. There is a good site for comparing e-readers Hope you find what you want there. Hope he likes the present. V generous of you might I add!!!"

childs Electronic book reader? leapster? My daughter loves to read books with me.....i am looking to buy a leapster for her for when we drive in the car to keep her busy on long trips. Do leapsters read or are they like playing games and stuff? she is only going to be 2 in july so i want to get her a simple one that she would understand. Any ideas on any child book readers? Thanks so much :)

number two is on the way™ replied: "we have both the first leappad and the tag. the first leappad is less expensive, they have a pen, can read, play games.. my daughter enjoys it... very easy to change games. the tag, is more expensive (almost $14.00 for a book!), with it you can read and play games, although you have to download the program onto your computer and put the games/stories on the pen, it only holds five at a time. i think my daughter really enjoys the first leappad the best and plays with it the most. you can't find it a lot of places, toys r us still sells them, and ebay their are lots of deals. hope i helped. good luck"

If you could have an electronic book reader what would you want it to do? I want one and there are a few things they can do other than display writing, what would you want one to do? I obviously want it to read books...

just wondering replied: "I want it to hunt rabbits for rabbit stew."

Godot_vs_Phoenix_Wright replied: "Read tv"

Vietnam War Veteran replied: "There are electronic book readers?"

Dale replied: "Read books"

Sony Reader/Electronic Book Reading Device? I am interested in buying one, but would like to know, if I would have to buy books from specific sites, or can I simply transfer ebooks from my computers hard drive onto the device to read it like a book. -Thanks.

Orien A replied: "I own a Sony PRS-505 and am absolutely in love with it. Before, you had to use the proprietary Sony Ebook store, which only US residents could use, so that was a problem for me since I am located in Australia, but there's recently been a firmware update which makes it possible to buy secure Adobe and EPub files from other ebook sites. Also, if the files that you have in your computer are .txt and .rtf or .pdf you can just load them to the reader with no prob. You just can't read mobipocket, Microsoft reader files and other proprietary files like that. Check out The Sony Reader forum is very active and has lots of great tips for use!"
