I have a dark cherry wood sleigh bed with matching furniture and want a dark room to sleep in..decorating tips Decorating tips anyone? Like what color should I paint my bedroom to keep it dark enough to have a cave like atmosphere when I sleep...ideas at all?

stevey_32 replied: "its not so much the color of your paint than your window treatments. get room darkening lined drapes. believe me i have them and when they are closed, even in the day it is pitch black in my room. its great since i work nights."

Mother knows best! replied: "If you like the Victorian Era you could paint your room a plum colour and add a touch of gold to give it some shine , use a blind to keep the room dark when you are sleeping , ivory sheers. A dark bedspread or bed in a bag if you like would complete the room , I would buy the bedspread first and then pick the darkest colour out of it and have it computer matched by the paint store ."

Designer replied: "Okay, I understand that you want a dark room to sleep in, but you can accomplish that with proper drapes and black out lining. If you paint your walls dark rich colors you will drastically reduce the reflection of light so it will be cave like when your awake as well. Any dark color will work, and you could paint the ceiling the same color, but if you have beautiful cherry furniture, it will disappear against the dark walls lending no contrast. Black out lining will greatly reduce the light that comes in your windows, if that is the problem. go for the dark colors, but it will cave it out for the rest of your waking hours as well."

sealife8 replied: "I would suggest go with a deep green. I assume you still want the bed to be seen. This will give some contrast between the walls and dark wood so they don't blend together and disappear. Yet it will still give you the cave like atmosphere you "c"rave at night time when it will appear almost black."

yowza replied: "play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours: I think a dark green like "garden gate" (# 6167) would be ideal. You can also take a photo of your room & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website: You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like. And the person who suggested new window treatments is right - they do make a difference. I have faux wood blinds in my bedroom & it stays pretty dark in there: You can also get some shades with a blackout feature:"

JAP replied: "First thing I would purchase would be room darkening shades for your windows. I purchased mine through JC Penney, but there may be other retailers who also carry them. Cherry wood furniture is very rich and beautiful. Therefore, you should use a paint color on your walls with the same richness that your furniture has. I would recommend a few colors from Sherwin William's. Option one: A brown color called "Colonial Revival Stone #2827". Second option: A medium muted shade of green called "Sage Green Light #2851". That was my favorite until I went into the blue section and found a color for option three: " Bunglehouse Blue #0048". This is a muted darker blue that really makes the cherry wood "pop". I tried to find a shade of gold, since gold is intense and rich also, but didn't like how any of the choices looked next to the cherry furniture. You can check out my choices for your bedroom color at the following site. I chose the bedroom with the cherry furniture to get the best comparison to your room. Good luck!!!"

Has anyone bought the Camelot Bedroom Furniture Set made by Hillsdale Furniture? I'm considering the 4 piece Queen Sleigh Bed set from Sam's Club, One Way Furniture, and other online furniture dealers. If you bought this set please let me know what you think of it.

nwdoss replied: "I have worked for a company that sold Hillsdale Furniture for four years...the Camelot is a nice group. If you have any problems, they are really good about standing behind their products."

do i mix bedroom furniture? i have a cream bedroom with a white wooden sleigh bed and white wardrobe, i want to get a chest of drawers and bedside cabinet but i am not sure whether to get white or mix it up and have a different shade. any ideas/pictures?

kandie replied: "I think you should keep the color the same."

sam replied: "i say mix it up"

amil replied: "better leave as it is."

Justin replied: "Another color would be fine. It sounds like white is the main color since the main peices are already white. I would add a single other color that does not overpower the exisitng colors. Such as an earth tone chest and cabinet. Also to pull everything together, you should accent with a similar colored throw rug, curtains, lamp shades, pillows or a comforter."

professor grey replied: "If you're adding a "color" (painted furniture) that would work well. Normaly I wouldn't advise adding wood stained furniture with painted, especially in a small room (not sure of the size of your room though) but the cream and white colors you have going sound like they would work well with wood furniture also."

donna d replied: "mix it up alittle.it would look nice to add some wood in there it would look nice with the white a nice oak wood will do the trick i would not get cheap pine that would look too tacky get something like an oak."

dawnb replied: "Since you already have quite a bit of white/cream going on, a darker wood would look out of place and heavy. Stick with your color scheme."

Tigger replied: "Definitely mix it up a bit: You have a lot of light colors, so now you need something to give it a bit of punch. You don't want black: That would scream just a bit. But just about any other color would work well, so go with what you like. Good luck!"

dcmodernliving replied: "I think you have a lot of different options. Having furnishings pretty much being white and cream colored your options to add other colors will work with it. If you mix it up, some light blues and red would look great with it. Look at some pictures in magazines or look online. I've provided some links below where you could get some ideas."

tlw733 replied: "Absolutely mix it up! Anyone can buy a set of furniture that matches. Express yourself with the decor around you. Buy what you like and make the room individually yours."

Do modern furniture and sleigh style furniture mix well? I'm currently in the process of redecorating and the first room I would like to do is my 2 year old's bedroom.. he will be 2 soon and I am looking for a toddler bed for him. He has this armoire in White and I am interested in this bed would they look wrong in the same room? He also has a matching dresser like the armoire in white also.. and a large white modern style toy organizer. We will be painting his room in turquoise and white and I will be using fabrics with modern designs. I would just like to add that I tend to mix these two styles often.. I love them both. Here is a photo I cropped, the dresser can be seen here in his room. Just to give more of an idea.. Thank you AspenDreamer.. although the Armoire and Dresser are white.. not stained. All furniture in his room is white.. the bed would be the only birch colored piece of furniture. They do have the bed in white.. perhaps I will go with that. :)

Aspen Dreamer replied: "I like your choices of furniture and I think they look fine together since I have no matching pieces in my house... However, I think you might want to try staining the wood on the bed to match the armoire... That would look great then... Maybe you can paint or stain the dresser as well to match... I still think the styles look great together... Perhaps paint or stain the bed to be white then??? Sorry I originally misunderstood the colors..."

color to compliment this bedding set? just posted a question but wanted to give better details. what wall colors would compliment this bedding set? I have the dark red one. Its much prettier and darker red in person. My bedroom furniture is a medium oak sleigh bed. floors are going to be medium-darker oak hardroom. I'm going to be bringing in some asian inspired elements into the bedroom decor. I'm thinking about chocolate brown.

Megan replied: "Chocolate brown, a warm gold, or grey."

Nurse Susan replied: "I would paint walls white, cream, or ivory and add some black and gold in the decor - will be great Asian colors. [ brown doesn't show up too much in Asian decor ]. Include paper lanterns, fans, 'nature' pics [ cherry blossoms, fish, birds, etc. ] maybe a kimono, inspirational words in Asian script, oriental furniture such as a chest, bench, table or trunk."

an_arch_ist replied: "A good cheat I've found for picking color is on sherwin williams' site. It's called color visualizer. When you click a color it'll give you two compliments t that color. Have fun!"

DesignDiva1 replied: "I'm thinking a caramel or a cream"

I need help designing my bedroom!? I am looking for an old style caribbean feel. But am not sure where to begin. I have a beautiful mahogany sleigh bed and furniture that I want to use. I have been trying to look for pics to get more ideas, but haven't come across any. So any designers out there your ideas are welcome.

Blue Sky Dreamer replied: "Here's a picture: I'd definitly do some mosquito netting around the bed."

Ahmad B replied: "im 14 and im redoing my bedroom to i think you should get morrocan throws and hang them as a canopy at each end and tied and a morrocan bed set including piloows cushions and a a fancy bench morrocan stye infont of your bed hope it helpd!!!!!!!!!!!!"

treehousemaker1 replied: "Take your room and paint it in tanish colors with a wooden trim aroun everything. Take a moisquito net and drape it over the corners of your bed to give it that real carribean look. I think that you can get pictures that cover your wall too, like an island with palm trees and stuff like that sort. Have fun decorating your room!"

Stored cherry bedroom suite - a LOT of dust settled into the grooves. How do I get it out? The bed is a sleigh bed and the swirls in the ends have been carved into the finish. The dust settled into those areas, as well as the grain of the furniture. I'm guessing that I will need to use a toothbrush and some form of cleaning paste. But, I have no idea what I should try. I would be really upset if I hurt my furniture...

feminaformosa replied: "I would try q-tips, and failing that, compressed air (like the kind you get for keyboards). Cherry sleigh beds are beautiful; I hope you get the result that you are hoping for. As for products, I have had good luck with Pledge for cleaning wood, but there are lots of options out there."

Larry J replied: "Before you decide to use a toothbrush and cleaning paste, try to find someone with a small portable air compressor and see if it is possible to blow the dust out of the grooves. It would be much faster and less work than using a brush. I had somewhat the same problem once and it worked for me. Good luck!"

J.M.C replied: "I would try to get an aerosol can of compressed air that people use to clean computer keyboards. You can get it at any office max or store like that. Compressed air might just blow the dust out of those crevasses for you without any harm to the finish. It is worth a try first, I'd say."

fiddlesticks9 replied: "Use a soft brush and the vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust. Do NOT use a wire brush."

joo_0420 replied: "Use a soft brissel tooth brush and some water not alot of water and brush softly and in small strokes. Then take a Q-tip to get out the moist dust , repeat till no dust shows on the Q-tip"

overtaxed replied: "Been there, done that. Here's what I did: First, I took an air compressor, and sprayed the "loose dust" out. (Do this outside, so you don't have to clean up your mess.) Then, take a boatlaod of QTips and Orange Glo Oil, and start the job. Spray a small area of the furniture, and swab the carved areas with the Q-Tips. Larger, flat areas can simply be wiped down with an old T-Shirt. It's time consuming, but won't hurt the furniture. Any bristle from a brush will/may cause some damage."

darlin12009 replied: "i would use the vacuum with the soft brush attachment. then, i would use a spray lemon oil furniture cleaner, and saturate the grooves, try wiping out the dust with a soft cloth, if that doesn't get it, use a very soft toothbrush to coach the dirt out. then wipe down again with the soft cloth. good luck"

Pacifica replied: "I use a very soft shoe buffing brush with a small amount wood cleaner on the woodwork in my house and the odd little spaces on my mahogony dinning table. Some genius carpenter installed amazing wood in our house, but the groves all over the place are impossible to clean without using a brush or investing in a maid. Tooth brush may be too hard. Be patient, this may take a few tries."

House Mouse replied: "pressure wash it"

Laura C replied: "use your vacuum cleaner,or an air blower do you have attacments to your vacuum does it have strong suction then use it."

rudiangela replied: "cherry furniture are beautiful, i agree you do not want to hurt the finish, the brush may be too harsh so try getting those cans of compressed air that they use on keyboards, try a soft thin paint brush to assist in the wiping of the area being blown. if not try a q-tip dampened with beeswax, or other furniture polish."

one4you2belike replied: "what I do is first vacuum with the brush attachment - then I use 'liquid gold' furniture polish spray - you can spray it on and it will go in the grooves easily once you have removed most of the dust/dirt with the vacuum."

percsrock2000 replied: "First I would take a can of compressed air and get out the large particles, then try some lemon oil on a cleaning cloth. I had some furniture in storage, some dust also got into my furniture, but it came right out. You can buy it at most super centers and it's really cheap, like only 2 bucks for a bottle and the bottle lasts me about 6 months, and that's cleaning all of my furniture bi-weekly. hope this helps"

lennie replied: "I just finished cleaning my bedroom, due to illness I haven't been able to keep up with it, and I can't believe how much dust was in the groves,So I sprayed some furniture polish on a QTip and used that to get into the design, it worked great, there were a few swirls that I had to take a tooth pick and covered it with a cotton cloth and did it in the small groves, again it worked. then I was able to wax all of it together."

james m replied: "If the bed is an antique you don't want to clean the dust out of the small lines and depressions. That would lower the value. If the bed isn't that old, and it's just collected dust a soft toothbrush and a lot of time should do the job, with perhaps whatever type of polish you use on the furniture to loosen any really stubborn bits"

judy b replied: "i have a lot of antique and wood furniture. be very careful to maintain the beauty and not to scratch. I take murphy oil and take a q tip and slowly work the grime out works for me.(lemon pledge and q tip work too!) I have some very expensive items, Polish and dust regularly to maintain beauty. wood can dry out without proper care and crack! God bless"

Where can I find tips on redecorating my bedroom? When I moved into my house, I planned to redecorate my bedroom to be really cool. The wallpaper in my room was teddy bears and stripes, because it used to be a little girl's room. I had it painted a nautical blue color like this. I got a queen sized sleigh bed like this. I don't like my bedding but couldn't find any I did like and I needed some since I had a twin sized bed before. The bedding is from Target and is white with black flowers. I have a white desk, because my old bedroom had all white furniture and the desk was new, so I didn't want to get rid of it. I have a nightstand from TJ Maxx which is blue with hand painted flowers on it, in a faded gold color. I have a circular chair from Pier One with a black cushion (like that one but with the black cushion. I have white carpet. The wood around the single window and door frame is brown, but the door is white. I really wanted a sophisticated, European, modern type of bedroom. Here are some examples : >
Clarissa A replied: "i loved all the European styles. look on hgtv.com"

Alice replied: "Looks like you already know what you want. Try hgtv."

What should I do about the "disappearing" bed? I need to know if I am just obsessing about this...and how should I handle this???!!?? My 20-year-old son is having a hard time "finding himself"...normal hormonal, newly-found independence and freedom deal...and for now, he's taking all of his anger out on me...his Mom! At the beginning of this year he needed to move in with me until he got a job and a place of his own. In preparation for his moving in, I furnished my spare bedroom with a brand-new sleigh bed, mattress, lamps, end tables, the works! Well, after a few months of living together, and way too many fights and tons of disrespect, I had to ask him to leave. It had gotten to the point where my trying to make his life as pleasant and easy as possible, MY life was miserable. So, I was away from home (at an appointment) the day that he moved out...so when I did arrive home that day, I was surprised to find that my son had taken every single piece of furniture that was in that room, plus some area rugs from other spots in my home, with him...the room was picked clean (except, of course for the trash that he didn't want to take!). I was upset...and talking to him about it didn't make a difference....I had mentioned once before that if he got a job and a place to live as planned, he could possibly take the bed with him so he would have a place to sleep until he got his own furniture. He ended up moving in with a friend who lives with HIS mother...and I thought it was weird that he took the furniture, because he doesn't have any place to put it...I've been mad as well because this brand-new bed and mattress alone cost almost $800...and I had JUST purchased it. So now time has passed...and I just recently learned that on the day that my son moved out of my house, he allowed his Father (my ex husband) to come to my house....and apparently my ex husband is the one who just helped himself to all of the furniture! I called my ex yesterday to confront him with this and to ask if I could have my bed back (PLEASE!)...and he coldly told me that he couldn't give it back because someone is using it! Should I just drop it...even though I am stuck with a vacant guest room and out $800....? ...should I sue him for it? One other possibility is....upon coming home and finding my son's "ex" room empty I DID call the police because he had done some damage to the inside of my home...and my primary concern was to document that he had left before I had the locks changed (weird landlord/tenant laws in FL)...I had included in the report that he had taken furniture that was not his....I'm wondering if I can call the police and tell them that I have since found out that I was quite literally "robbed" by my ex husband...and see if they can collect my bed from him....hmmmmmm Help!!!

Kat replied: "I guess it kind of depends on what is most important to you. Is your main concern getting the furniture back or being compensated for it? If so, take legal action. You have a case. If, however, your main concern is feeling better and being rid of the feeling that you were ripped off - repairing the emotional damage this has caused - it is best to drop it. A court case/police battle would heighten the situation before it would resolve it and it would take longer to put it all behind you. Good luck with whatever you choose."

Mandy replied: "Um no you're not overreacting. I would get the bed back for sure! $800 out of YOUR pocket not your son's or ex's--so get it back. Ask the police what they can do to help. If that doesn't work figure out ways to get the furniture back. I'm not sure how, but I'm assuming you know your ex husband well enough to get stuff from him. Good luck! :)"

techno replied: "You have been robbed, press charges, neither one had a right to take your belongings, that's why they did it while you were out.Any Judge will rule for your side."

new bedroom help!!!? ok so im re-doing my bed room and the walls are going to be pink, or two diff. shades of pink striped. [EX: one of the colors for the Victoria's secret bag, or just one of them... if you don't know what it looks like here's the link: ] im getting brown wood flooring also. and i am getting a pink and white bed spread, and my sheets are pink with white polkadots... [a darker pink then the walls] do u think it will look ok? do u have any suggestions? i was thinking of getting a sleigh bed.. and of course a desk and dresser. but my REAL question that I NEED an answer too is what kind of furniture should i get? WHITE or BROWN? please help! ok so pink/pink stripe[cant decide yet!] walls, brown hard wood, white and pink bed spread, what color furniture? i like white but idk... brown might look good too! thanks if u can help :]

Jess replied: "I'd go with a dark espresso brown furniture set. It will look nice with the decor you are planning now but will also look great with a lot of other color schemes.....you know, for when you get sick of pink ;)"

cinderelloparakeet replied: "Well I have pink bedding and stuff my furniture is off white or like a a light brown tannish would look good too. Hope I helped"

Midnightsal replied: "Cream colored furniture is just warm enough to pull it together."

Anya B replied: "You didn't say how old you are and my first thought is that white is kind of juvenile. Very girly so if that's your goal then maybe that's good. I think a dark wood will look best with these colors you've described. As times passes you may want to change the colors and wood tones are easier to work with than white."
