Questions and Answers
Are there work from home scams where they are really phishing for your social security #? I'm just wondering - if I gave my social to some work from home company - what could they do just having that and my name? Are there very well set up scams out there just phishing for personal information? What does a person do if they make a mistake other than call the BBB? There's already a caution out on my social - so they probably can't do anything anyway right? I gave my address name and social and I'm just wondering - what do I do if I made a mistake. I found out that there is a listing with an F rating in Corona for this company - meaning that they are conducting fraudlent business practices or expecting people to work and then terminating them after 4 hrs and not paying. If that's all if is - then I'm not too concerned but if they can steal my identify - I need to know what to do about that scenario.

Laissez-Faire Guy replied: "Most are scams, but usually looking to fleece you of money, not for ID theft. With name and SS#, they could potentially start some ID theft. Is that all you gave? No birthday or address?"

theosharatos replied: "The only reason they would ask for it is so they can send you tax information at the end of the year. But if you didn't get all the details about the company up front, you probably shouldn't have given them your number. Be careful. A lot of those companies are out to scam you. From experience. Seems like the only way to work from home - sell email scams. Anybody got honest opportunities no/low cost? Every day I get email work at home scams. Wondered if anybody had waded through the scum and found honest opportunities that don't require you to purchase something. I need to stay at home with my seriously ill wife but can't afford to quit my job.

Serenity replied: "Sorry about your wife's illness. I would say that 99.9999999% of the emails that you get are phishing scams. I researched so many of those that I would not even know where to start to explain the cons and scams. I can tell you that after so much research I did find one company that I am proud to say I joined with, they have a few awards from the BBB, they have over twenty years of experience, and near a billion dollars in sales just last year. They have free support and free training, and every person I have met with them is interested in helping me make my life better. You will not have to buy stock and sell it, collect outstanding debts, or anything like that. If you want to take a look at the information send me an email and I will send you the contact information (just click on my name and there is a contact icon to the right of my name). Good luck, and my best wishes regarding your wife's health and your dreams, Guard5a"

It's got to cost something eventually. I, and several friends, have had experience with an established compahy that offers a legitimate work from home opportunity. Check it out at"

It requires practically zero startup cost (maybe about $6.90 per month for a web hosting service) and all you need is a computer and Internet connection. What is up with all these fake work from home scams? if a sight has to take two pages convincing you to sign up for their program, (of which should be in high demand if its on the up and up and shouldn't need convincing) how can they possibly be honest? and what is up with them wanting your credit card information, do they think people are that desperate to believe they could work from home? are there any sites out there that are legitimate that dont do what I mentioned above?

7128 replied: "Yes, they do believe that people are desperate enough to fall for their scam, and people do. That's why they continue to run those sites. There may be legitimate work-from-home sites, but I have yet to find them."

Greg replied: "Hey starfire_85, how's it going? OMG I know exactly what you're talking about. It is ridiculous with all of those scam sites. I tried a few and I just lost out on a few bucks, nothing major. I did, however, get into internet marketing because of one of those programs. I have been working in internet marketing for a little over a year now, and I absolutely love it. I made a little under $200k last year, and that's nothing to sneeze at. I wrote a personal blog about my story at . The product described there is actually a legitimate offer. I told the manufacturer I made a lot of money with their product and I wanted to direct people to it from my appreciation of their product. I asked them the same question you did, and they replied to me: "Due to safety and verification procedures, it is unethical and unlawful to have a credit card text field that isn't directly affiliated with our product" When you enter a card number from their site, it is secure, whereas it wouldn't be secure from any random website that says they are affiliated. So I think that answers your question. If you are interested in an actual legitimate work from home product, I recommend the one from my site. The instant access centers are real, the product is real, the paychecks are real. It does cost $2.24 for shipping, which you can probably find under your couch cushions :) Good luck starfire_85 , hope I helped!"

LiveXtreme replied: "This is a real company (Publicly Traded) an amazing product with lots of science to back it up. I forgot to mention great training.. ABC PrimeTime did a piece on this product."

KD J replied: "I can understand what you are talking about. I'm a stay at home mom and have a 16 month old daughter, am earning through internet marketing. Check out this"

David replied: "I work from home for few years now. The company is legit and has been on the market since 1999. They pay me every time - no issues! You can start for free and work whenever you have time. But, if you decide to work from home (online), you need somebody to show you what do you have to do, otherwise u will do too many unnecessary things. I started on my own, and I was not making any progress for quite a while. Anyway than I joined this program and I got really good sponsor. He showed me everything I needed to know. And now, I'm passing it forward... Please take a look at this video first, so you will get the idea what is it all about. I want you to watch it because you can see payment proof in it, so you will know that I am not lying or anything. Here is the link: Link to the Web Site is on the right of the video. If you decide to join, I will be your sponsor and I will help you get started and along the way. For more info write to this e-mail:"

I am sick of online work from home Scams! Does anyone know of anyone or a legit work from home business!? I have been Scammed more than twice and wont to work from home. I don't wont a survey site or a quick get rich scheme. Does anyone have any advice. Please help" Thank you.

safron replied: "thats capitalism for you"

Sentient Tornado replied: "If I were you, I would first of all understand that 99% of work-from-home jobs ARE in fact scams. The few that are legit cannot offer you more than $500 to $1,000 monthly, so they are really just supplemental income--you can't live off of it realistically. As for ones that require "start up cost" or "registration fee" or "sign-up fee" or some other form of payment made to them, THOSE are the obvious scams. You should never have to pay a penny to have someone employ you to work at home. If they ask for money, even a few dollars, write them off as a scam and ignore them. My mother's friend actually did find a legit job (I believe handling data entry a few hours a day), but it does not pay much. The good thing is, of course, she can work from home and watch her kids, saving hundreds of dollars a month on day care costs. Good luck!"

The Chad replied: "Companies are starting to be more willing to allow people to work from home but the best way to be able to do this would be to start your own company and advertise yourself as an outsourcing service. While you may not be able to get much business from larger companies, many startups may be willing to hire you to take calls for them, set up appointments, or other activites that you could do from home. Unfortunately, most work from home opportunities that people advertise are scams, or pyramid schemes, or somethings of the like. As I said before, if it is too good to be true, it usually is. It is really sad that so many people are out there trying to take advantage of others..."

MillCap11 replied: "Hi Miss09, I totally understand your frustration! I think it's really sad that during these tough economic times there are people out there taking your money and not being honest about the opportunity."

spamissatanic replied: "The ONLY way that you are going to be able to work from home, is to invent the business yourself and take all of the risk of running a small business yourself and provide some product or service that people are willing to pay for. other than that, there is NO on-line "JOB"!"

Bella replied: "There are a lot of scams out there, especially with the current state of the economy. A get rich quick scheme will tell you that you will be making big money very quickly and with very little work. The truth of the matter is, there is no such thing! A legit opportunity takes work and commitment! I have a legitimate work at home business that has been around for 16 years and is a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This business takes work, but the results are well worth it! Hope this helps and good luck, Jennifer Newman"

kirby0407 replied: "Some people confuse on-line "jobs" with "business opportunity". The first thing to do is decide what you are really looking for. The second thing I would advise doing is finding someone you trust that is already involved with a home based business. This person should be having success himself or herself with the business. You should also understand that as with any business, you do have start up costs involved. You should also have the basic "tools" available such as internet connection and nationwide calling on your phone. You should also enjoy talking to people and have a strong desire to succeed in your business. I am involved with such a business myself. I feel like I am trustworthy and am willing to help you get started as well. However, due to Yahoo's restrictions, you should email me at and I would be happy to give you some information."

I am trying to find legit typing work from home w/no scams or money up front. Any suggestions? I have searched the internet & it always comes down to the prospective employer wanting money. I am temporarily disabled but need income & would like to find work typing from home. I am a good typist & have high speed internet access as well as numerous software programs. However, all I see on the internet appear to be scams. Is there any legit typing work at home?

Mariela C replied: "YEAH I AM WORKING AT HOME AND IT IS NOT A SCAM IF YOU WANT I CAN SEND YOU INFORMATION, CONTACT TO ME"

neopoe replied: "Unfortunately Most of what you see on the Internet as far as typing jobs are just outright scams. Your best bet is to post your resume with monster.com or Career Builder here is one you have to pay for but at least it will lead to real work. Good Luck"

kmangothic replied: "Contact local commercial printers and digital print centers and let them know what you are capable of. The work they can give you is often infrequent, but with 25 reliable contacts you should get all the work you want. Fonts, layout, graphics are a plus and something you should look into getting training for. Typing only the going rate is probably about $9 per page. Layout and design moves to $25 per page. Be patient and be available. Offer to work weekends and/or overnight as necessary. Seek those that publish small runs, as they appeal to independent creatives that still write on paper!"

Harry replied: "http://bdjob.blogspot.com"

Carrie H replied: "I have came across a few companies that hire disabled people to work from home, most of which is phone work I think but they seemed like good paying positions. Check out message boards as the companies have been discussed several times on the telecommuting mom's board. It's also a good community to network with. Another site that will be useful to you is which is a free site with a directory of legitimate companies that hire telecommuters. It can be hard to find straight typing/data entry jobs, so you will most likely find jobs that will use those skills in conjunction with other job duties, like at home customer care representative, transcription, writer, proofreader, editor, blogger, telemarketing from home, mystery shopping, virtual assistant, and freelance projects. Good luck!"

vicseo replied: "If you are an accomplished typist - word processor and have recently visited your local city college or university librarian, you can apply as a "certified" graduate typist, earning between $1.50 to $2.00 per page for a master or doctoral thesis. The librarian will provide you with a sample of the typing template (i.e., margin settings, font selection, page set up, etc.) in order to complete these projects. An average weekend income is about $300-$400 for two days work. Good luck!"

are the work from home offers scams? I have been searching for jobs and I keep getting these offers for "Work from Home positions" and "rebate processor from home" - are these scams? has anyone had success with these? thanks!

breasia replied: "Most of them are. If they ask you for money, whatever sum, run, don't walk, away."

bob s replied: "Do not send any money.SCAM, SCAM, SCAM"

treyz mami replied: "Most of them are and some of them arent. The ones that ask you for money to get started with their program are scams."

jellokatt replied: "yes. any of them that emailed you are. any of them that talk about buying software are. there are some legit ones, but they won't be looking for you. most of the work at home positions are taken (especially in this economy). they will NOT email you or offer you huge sums of money if they are legit."

wicked witch of the west replied: "I think the best work at home jobs are the ones you start for yourself. Come up with an idea and run with it. You'd have to look at what you're capable of doing. Put your ads on-line telling what you want to do and have it listed with all the search engines along with leaving your email address. Good luck with your new job!"

Rodney replied: "yes of course"

Mark replied: "I'm an internet marketer who has purchased many of these programs online over the years. Funny thing is, processing rebates from home was the first one I bought. It's not a scam, but because of the way most people look at things, if they bought it, they would probably think so. This will be a bit long but if your willing to read it, I'll explain. There are different versions of this program but generally they advertise that you can make great money processing rebates from home. In another section, they go on to say that big names like Lowe's, Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond need people to process rebates from home. In most peoples minds they assume that making the great money processing rebates from home comes from processing rebates for the big names. The fact is , when you buy the package, the part about how to process for the big names has the smallest section in the course devoted to it. What they actually teach you is how to use internet marketing techniques to advertise the same package you just bought to other people. It's the sale from these packages that will allow you to make the great money they say you can. Most people never make this money because they fail to see the true potential and start crying SCAM. This is the perspective I'm talking about. Keeping an open mind to see what they are actually teaching you would be better than passing judgment and being angry. You can always return it within the time allowed...it's no big deal. What about the rebates? The rebate is a technique to make the sale when your competing against someone selling the same product as you. You offer a rebate to the customer as an incentive to purchase from you instead your competition. If they do, that's when you would "process a rebate from home" and send it to the customer. The secret about these programs that most people don't realize is that they are just pieces to the larger puzzle of internet marketing. If people looked at it this way, they would be more successful, living the lifestyle they wanted. Now. This program may not be for you. It wasn't for me and I'm not recommending it. But I can't say it's a scam because they do teach you everything they say they will. You just think it's going to be a bit different because of how they explained it in the sales letter or advertisement. But can we blame them? We only give advertisers about 3-5 seconds to grab our attention. If they get it, we give them another 10 seconds or so to keep it. If not... ...we're gone. Therefore, advertisers have to choose words wisely in order to keep our attention.Using things like "big name merchants" to make us feel comfortable with them is only one of many ways of doing it. Now that you have perspective, is it worth doing what I did and join every list and use every free trial you can? Maybe, if that's your style. These days however, there are much better programs out there that are complete with core training, money making blueprints, and full phone support but they are few and far between. Now that I have the money, I like to see what other marketers are doing. I tell you this because I just joined a club that has really impressed me with the quality of material he brings to the table. Internet marketing has a lot of facets and this program covers them all in a nice professional format. Like I said, I'm impressed and I've seen a lot of programs. If you want to drop me an email I'll let you know where to go to check it out. I don't want to spam this message. As far as "processing rebates from home"...knowing what I know now, you can make some good money if you apply and stick to the techniques taught. If you're just getting started however, you're probably just going to get stuck. That's why, I suggest something like an online club with full phone support so you can ask as many questions to along the way. Processing rebate programs and smaller internet marketing programs work, but you'll need perspective to know that there are other pieces to the puzzle you'll have to learn on your own. Hope this helps..."

Can I get a list of work from home scams please? I am working on a project, and I want as many of these 100% known scams that you all have had the pleasure of trying. Try to remember what they required you to do, the out come, and of course the name of the program. Give as many & much detail as possible. Please only give me ones you or someone you know has tried. Oh, and did you get your money back?

Serenity replied: "The thing about scams is that they change their names, their domain and their contact information as often as they can to stay ahead of the people that do research Check the BBB. use your favorite search engine type in "work from home" in quotes then the word scam. You should get thousands if not millions of hits."

I am part of a company that is expanding with independent associates that has been around for 33 years. Not sure if you are interested in something on that level but you can see more about it at my site. "

Want to work from home, do not want scams? I am looking for kind of work that I can do from home that isn’t a scam, or a “pay us, and you can work from home,” (scam). Without a doubt I know there is someone out there that actually has some none scam home based job that doesn’t involve out of pocket expenses or some other scammy type thing. Could anyone make a suggestion here? Oh, and someone suggested that “home biz for all” might be just the thing, but this looked way to scam like for me (check out all the “sign up for free,” and “simple to use PayPal or Credit Card” signs- thanks but no thanks). Looking at some of the suggested sites below I find it funny that they want you to sign in, or register first then they will tell you what the business is, and to me that is just way to scammy. I am presently checking through them looking for the ones that I do not like or trust because of their lack of information before signing up. Also AdAware is helping by looking for spy ware being placed (any that do are obvious scams). I thank you all for your thoughts, and suggestions, the positive responses here on Yahoo Answers gives me hope that somewhere out there, there are people that actually want to help each other. :-)

I would rather recommend learning what to look for and this report can help you a lot more than any one spamming their opportunity. If you can't find the file, send me an email and I would be glad to provide the exact link. It is not an affiliate of any sort. Miz X replied: "Yes, I work for several different companies doing "virtual administration" i.e.: a virtual secretary. It took me about 6 months - a year tog et enough work to be financially stable though (I make arounf 30k + benefits.) The way you do it is write up a resume and post it to craigslist. You will need to do this in any/all major cities in the US so you will need at least 4 different email accounts (craigslist only lets you post 4 posts per email account) and a public internet connection like a library (if you post too much in a short amount of time, craigslist will temorarily ban your ip because it thinks you are spamming.) Remove all personal information from your resume (real name, address, phone number) and use craigslist's anonyous forwarding system to insure you don't get get spam and telemarketing calls. Every month, repeat the resume posting process. Be sure to put in your title "virtual administrator" and put a mini coverletter in the beginning of your resume but be prepaired for companies who do not understand what a virtual administrator is to contact you. Also be prepaired to sift through a lot of crap, ie: fake job offers, spam etc. With time you will get some legitimate leads and remember any position requiring you to pay money for training is not legitimate. Also, check craigslist for posts about people wanting virtual administrators and send them your resume."
